✦ THE INSPIRATION
Inspired by the spirit of navigation and the trust placed in a steady compass, Captain's Compass is about letting curiosity lead the way. Each month charts a course toward a different story, a unique expression of place, and the quiet anticipation of not knowing exactly where you'll land. Follow the heading rather than the map, and let the voyage unfold. Wherever it leads, the compass always points toward something remarkable.
Papua New Guinea is one of the most underexplored and challenged coffee origins in the world, at least when it comes to supply chain. Coffee here is grown on small, remote farms, typically just a few acres, managed by individual families with organic inputs and little to no infrastructure beyond picking and sorting cherries by hand. Getting quality coffee out of small producers like these has long been one of Papua New Guinea's biggest hurdles.
That's starting to change with Monpi Coffee Exporters, a new exporter supporting more than 1,000 producers across the Waghi Valley region. Monpi has invested in a centralized wet mill, along with local warehouses and logistics, to move coffee efficiently to their mill near the town of Ulya.
Monpi's centralized mill means individual farmers don't have to invest in their own processing equipment. Because each farm's harvest is small, farmers can focus on meticulous cherry sorting before their coffee is purchased and brought to the mill, where cherries are floated to remove damaged or underripe seeds before drying. Monpi has also added drying infrastructure that's meaningfully improved consistency in moisture content and water activity.
Beyond the mill itself, Monpi provides quality control and access to the international market, along with technical support to help farmers improve their farm management and diversify income. As the coffee's quality has drawn attention from importers and roasters, including us, farmers in the Waghi Valley are starting to earn more for what they grow.

Brewing At Home Pays Off
A daily café habit adds up fast. See how much you could save brewing this bag of coffee at home instead.
Rwanda was the first Captain’s Compass I tried once they opened it up for non subscribers. It was well-balanced and with enough flavor to make each sip interesting. The bag showed up fresh and the smell alone tells you it was roasted to order. Feels like a treat compared to my usual store bought coffee 😅

A fun surprise every month
Been getting Captain’s Compass for a bit now and honestly, I look forward to it. The coffee’s always fresh, super smooth, and I love not knowing what’s coming next. Plus it feels good knowing it’s helping the ocean in some way. Kinda makes the whole morning routine better.

My wife and I love getting the coffee of the month because we get to experience coffees that we might not have ever tried. (We even bought some extra one month to give as a Christmas present because we liked it so much.) It's a fantastic way to expand your coffee horizons!
IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING...
Sourcing & Quality
Where is your coffee sourced from?
Our coffee comes from farms and cooperatives across five major growing regions: Central America, South America, East Africa, Southeast Asia, and Oceania, including origins like Ethiopia, Colombia, Honduras, and Papua New Guinea. We select single-origin beans for their distinct flavor profiles, elevation, and growing practices.
Every blend we offer is crafted from single origins, never a blend of blends. This keeps profiles clean and consistent while preserving each origin's character.
What is specialty-grade coffee?
Specialty coffee scores 80 or higher out of 100, based on evaluation by certified tasters using Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) standards. Assessors analyze a 350-gram sample of green coffee to confirm it's free of primary defects and has no more than five secondary defects.
Reaching that grade takes ideal growing conditions and careful handling at every stage, from planting and harvesting to roasting and grinding. It's what makes each cup consistently complex and clean.
Is all whole bean coffee specialty grade?
Not quite. Whole bean just means the coffee hasn't been ground yet, that's about format, not quality. Specialty grade is its own classification, so whole bean coffee can be either specialty grade or standard grade.
Are there any sugars or sweeteners in your coffee?
No sugar or sweeteners, ever. All of our coffee is pure, single-origin or blended, with no unnatural flavors or hidden ingredients.
Why is specialty-grade coffee pricier than standard coffee?
Specialty-grade coffee costs more because it's produced in smaller quantities, requires more careful farming, and takes longer to roast well than lower-grade coffee.
Fair wages for farmers and producers are also part of the model, a cost mass-produced coffee often skips.
How do I know I’m getting good value for what I’m paying?
With Wonder Waves, you're paying for quality, transparency, and real impact, not overhead. We cut out unnecessary middlemen so more of your money goes toward the coffee and the ocean work behind it.
Brewing at home is also significantly cheaper than café prices. Use our Coffee Savings Calculator to see exactly how much you'd save.
Do you test your coffee for mold and mycotoxins?
Our FDA-registered, FSMA-compliant roasting partner monitors every bag from farm to finish to ensure mold-free green coffee. Roasting also kills any potential mold, so we don't run separate post-roast mold or mycotoxin testing.
Because our coffee is roasted to order and shipped immediately, it's among the safest specialty coffee available.
Is your coffee kosher?
Our coffee isn't formally certified kosher, but it's sourced and prepared in a way that meets the standards typically required, using specialty-grade beans with no additives or processes that would affect kosher compliance.
If you have specific certification needs, we recommend checking with your rabbi or religious advisor.
Shipping & Freshness
What do you mean when you say your coffee is "roasted to order?"
"Roasted to order" means we don't start roasting until you place your order. You'll never receive coffee that's been pre-roasted and sitting on a shelf or in a warehouse.
Why do you roast to order instead of keeping inventory?
Because fresh coffee tastes better. Roasting after you order means your beans arrive at peak freshness instead of sitting on a shelf. It's one more way we prioritize quality over convenience.
When can I expect my coffee order to arrive?
Domestic orders typically take 1 to 3 business days to process, roast, and dispatch, then 1 to 5 business days in transit depending on your location. Most orders land on your doorstep within a week.
When was my coffee roasted? Is it printed on the bag?
All our coffee is roasted and shipped the same day, so your roast date is the day it left our hands. Because it's roasted to order, we don't print a roast date on the bag, but you can count on it being as fresh as coffee gets.
Do you offer free shipping?
Yes, on orders over $35, we ship free to all 50 U.S. states and Puerto Rico. Below that, there's a flat $3.99 charge at checkout.
Do you offer expedited shipping?
We don't offer expedited shipping, for three reasons: it sets unrealistic expectations, it would mean passing extra charges on to you, and most importantly, our standard timeline lets freshly roasted coffee de-gas in transit, which is exactly what your coffee needs to hit peak flavor.
What are your shipping methods?
Each order is unique, and the shipping package and method are based on what's best for the shipping process depending on the order size:
Single 3-oz or 12-oz bag ship via USPS Ground Advantage
Single 16-oz bag ship via FedEx 2-Day
2 to 8 packages ship via USPS Priority Mail
9 or more packages ship via UPS Ground
Do you fulfill or ship orders on weekends?
While we're always working to get your coffee to you as quickly as possible, we don't process or ship orders over the weekend, since we believe our team deserves real time off for rest and family. Orders placed Saturday or Sunday start processing first thing Monday.
Do you ship your coffee internationally?
For now, we're keeping our coffee close to home, shipping to all 50 U.S. states and Puerto Rico. We're always looking toward new waters, so international shipping may be in our future.
Returns & Exchanges
What is your coffee's return policy?
Because coffee is a food product and yours is roasted just for you, we can't accept returns unless we've specifically requested one in writing.
If your order arrived incorrect, damaged, or you have questions about brewing or quality, our Brew Crew is here to help. Contact us within 48 hours of receiving your order and we'll make it right. See our full Return Policy for details.
I ordered the wrong coffee, what should I do?
If your order hasn't shipped yet (you haven't received a shipping confirmation email), contact us right away and we'll do our best to cancel it before it processes, so you can place a new order.
If it's already shipped or arrived and something's wrong, reach out the same way and we'll make it right. Since coffee is perishable, we're not able to accept returns.
Can I exchange my coffee order?
Since coffee is a food product, we're not able to accept exchanges. But if an error was made, you're unhappy with your coffee, or it arrived damaged, contact us within 48 hours of receipt and we'll make it right.
