Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Our Coffee

What do you mean when you say your coffee is "specialty grade?"

Unlike marketing terms like "gourmet coffee" and "premium coffee," specialty-grade coffee is a regulated distinction and recognized category of coffee in and of itself.

At Wonder Waves Coffee, all of our coffee offerings are specialty grade!

Check out the Specialty Coffee section below to learn more about it.

What do you mean when you say your coffee is "roasted to order?"

"Roasted to order" means we don't start roasting your coffee until you place an order with us. You heard that right—your coffee is prepared JUST for you!

You will NEVER (and we mean never) receive coffee from us that has already been roasted and sitting on a shelf or in a warehouse.

Bottom Line: No coffee you order from us is roasted before the order is placed!

Where is this month's 'Coffee of the Month' from?

This month, our captain's compass has pointed and navigated us towards Africa, with our Coffee of the Month hailing from the Ngozi Province in Burundi.

It's a bright and sweet Medium Roast with hints of nougat, brown sugar, and milk chocolate!

Click here to check it out!

Do you offer Decaf coffee?

Yes, we do! Not only that, it's decaffeinated naturally and without any chemicals whatsoever using the Swiss Water® Process.

Click here to check out our Decaf offering, Seabreeze Serenade, from Peru!

What qualifies as "Decaffeinated" for coffee?

The decaffeinating process must reduce the caffeine levels in the coffee by at least 97% to qualify as decaffeinated. However, all of our Swiss Water® Decaf coffee is 99.9% caffeine-free!

Do you test your coffee for mold and mycotoxins?

Our FDA-registered and and FSMA-compliant roasting partner monitors each bag from farm to finish, ensuring mold-free green coffee. Roasting kills any potential mold, so we don't specifically test for mold or mycotoxins post-roast.

With our roasted-to-order coffee and immediate direct shipping, you can trust our coffee is among the safest specialty coffee available!

Is your coffee organic?

Although not all of the coffee growers we work with and source from are formally certified organic, some are! In fact, at the moment, about 50% of our coffee offerings are certified organic.

Our formally-certified organic coffees have this designation specified in the product description as well as their ingredient listing, and are certified organic at the farm level.

Is Your Coffee Kosher?

While our coffee isn't formally certified as kosher, it adheres to all the necessary requirements typically associated with kosher foods.

Our coffee is purely sourced and prepared with the utmost care, ensuring that it meets the standards that would classify it as kosher under traditional guidelines. We use specialty-grade beans and avoid any additives or processes that could compromise its compliance with kosher practices.

If you have specific kosher certification needs or questions, we recommend consulting with your rabbi or religious advisor to ensure our coffee meets your requirements.

Is your coffee Fair Trade Certified?

Fair Trade Certified coffee is produced following strict standards that ensure sustainable livelihoods, safe working conditions, environmental protection, and transparent, robust supply chains.

We're currently undergoing the extensive certification and onboarding process and are pleased to say that we'll officially (and proudly) be Fair Trade Certified by July 2024!

That being said, and formal certification aside, our coffee has always been, remains, and will forever be sustainably sourced and ethically traded.

Are there any sugars or additives in your coffee?

No, we don't add sugar to any of our specialty-grade coffee, whether single-origin or blended.

In fact, all of our coffee is pure and unadulterated, without any additives, unnatural flavors, or hidden ingredients!

Do your Dark Roasts have more or less caffeine than Medium or Light Roasts?

Generally speaking, darker roasts have less caffeine than lighter roasts because the coffee beans are roasted longer, which typically cooks out more of the caffeine during the roasting process. The longer roast also gives a Dark Roast its “bold” flavor profile.

Specialty Coffee

What is specialty-grade coffee?

Specialty coffee is defined by its exceptional quality, scoring over 80 points out of 100 when evaluated by certified tasters. According to the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), 350 grams of green coffee are analyzed to ensure it's free of any primary defects and has no more than five secondary defects.

This grade of coffee is grown in specific geographical areas and microclimates by small producers prioritizing quality from farm to cup. Every step—planting, harvesting, selecting, processing, storing, roasting, grinding, and extracting—is meticulously handled to produce a coffee with complex flavors.

Buying these beans supports fair prices for coffee farmers, ensuring they are compensated fairly for their arduous work and dedication to producing high-quality coffee. This not only improves their livelihoods but also encourages sustainable farming practices that help maintain the quality and availability of specialty coffee for future generations.

Bottom Line: Specialty-grade coffee represents the pinnacle of coffee quality. Cultivated in optimal conditions with ideal weather and nutrient-rich soil, it undergoes meticulous processing and expert roasting. The result is an exceptionally flavorful cup of coffee that is virtually free from defects.

What's the difference between specialty coffee and "Premium" or "Gourmet" Coffee?

The superior quality of the beans is what sets specialty-grade coffee apart from other grades. This results in a more flavorful and consistent cup of coffee. It's important to note that terms like 'premium' and 'gourmet', while commonly used in marketing, lack the stringent standards that define specialty coffee.

Premium Coffee:

Premium coffee can be defined as a clean, acceptable bean with a distinctive flavor in the cup but one that didn't achieve a high enough score to be classified as specialty. Some commercial coffee brands offer above-average coffee that falls into the premium category.

Gourmet Coffee:

Gourmet coffee lacks a strict definition and can include specialty coffees and premium coffees, or it can be used as a marketing term. Generally, "gourmet" refers to foods meticulously selected to preserve their quality, often resulting from excellent harvesting or processing and consumed by individuals who appreciate their superior attributes.

Why is specialty-grade coffee more expensive than standard coffee?

Specialty-grade coffee tends to be pricier due to its rarity. These coffee beans are produced in limited quantities, with farmers dedicating significant effort to ensure top-notch quality. Furthermore, the roasting process for specialty coffee is more costly and time-consuming compared to that of lower-grade coffees.

How exactly is specialty coffee graded?

Coffee is evaluated based on various criteria such as appearance, aroma, flavor, acidity, body, and aftertaste. The maximum possible score is 100 points, with coffees scoring 80 points or higher classified as specialty grade.

Is all Whole Bean Coffee specialty grade?

If only it were that simple! No, not all Whole Bean Coffee is specialty grade. Whole Bean refers to coffee beans that are not yet ground, while specialty grade refers to the quality classification of the coffee bean itself.

What are the benefits of drinking specialty-grade coffee?

Drinking specialty-grade coffee offers numerous benefits. The most apparent advantage is its superior taste compared to lower-grade coffees. Additionally, specialty-grade coffee is less likely to have defects and contains more antioxidants than other varieties.

Which are the top producing countries of specialty grade coffee?

While coffee is produced in many countries around the globe, Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Mexico are among the leading producers. These nations are responsible for the majority of specialty-grade coffee bean production.

SHIPPING & FRESHNESS

When can I expect my coffee order to arrive?

All our coffee is shipped to arrive just as it reaches PEAK flavor.

Domestic orders generally take 1-3 business days to process and roast before shipping out. Once shipped, delivery takes about 1-5 business days, depending on your location.

This means you should expect to receive your fresh coffee in approximately a week, if not sooner!

When will my coffee order ship?

All coffee orders, if the coffee is in stock, will ship within 1-3 business days and on the same day it is roasted!

Do you offer FREE shipping?

Absolutely!

We offer 100% FREE shipping to all 50 U.S. states on orders $49 or more and $4.99 FLAT shipping on all other domestic orders, no matter the product, the number of items in your cart, or the shipping destination within the U.S.

Let's just say we like to keep things simple and flexible.

Do you offer expedited shipping?

We don't offer expedited shipping for three key reasons:

  • We feel it often sets unrealistic expectations and we don't want to lead you astray.
  • Avoiding extra charges for you and keeping them at bay is important to us.
  • Most importantly, our standard process allows for your freshly roasted coffee to de-gas in transit (this starts immediately after the roasting process) which ensures your coffee arrives at peak flavor!
What are your shipping methods?

Each of our orders is unique, and the shipping package and method are based on what's best for the shipping process. In general:

  • Orders containing a single 12oz package ship via USPS First Class
  • Orders containing 2 to 8 packages ship via USPS Priority Mail (flat rate or regional)
  • Orders containing 9 or more packages ship via UPS ground
What states do you ship to within the USA?

We ship to all 50 U.S. states with no exceptions or limitations whatsoever for non-contiguous states (Alaska & Hawaii)!

Do you ship your coffee internationally?

Who would we be if we didn't let our coffee cross the ocean?!

We plan to start shipping orders to Canada in June 2024 and, shortly after that, to the U.K. and most of Europe.

My order is taking longer than expected!

If your order is taking longer than expected, especially during the holidays or due to recent inclement weather conditions, we understand your frustration and concern. We've been there ourselves!

Please know that, while this isn't a normal occurrence, unfortunately it can and does happen. There isn't much we can do on our side to expedite your order once it's shipped out but rest assured—we'll get some amazing coffee in your hands sooner or later.

If your order seems to be "stuck" at a processing facility and there isn't any movement or tracking updates with your package for a few days, please let us know, and we'll be more than happy to send you another one.

Note: Unfortunately, the most inexpensive method of shipping, USPS First Class, tends to see the above issues more often than other shipping methods, especially during high volume periods.

If you just placed your order and/or your coffee has NOT shipped (i.e., you haven't received a shipping notification email yet), please email us immediately at splash@wonderwavescoffee.com and we should be able to fish out and cancel your order in time so that you may place a new one.
